Hi again Olly,

as I said before, the setup.py script I wrote above is far from being complete,
and as you I don't like to hardcode anything in any of the setup files or
Makefiles. I was rather thinking of some ways to either incorporate a call
to some "setup.py" script in the configuration phase, or to also let the
configuration phase itself generate a "setup.py" (I think I saw it once,
but don't remember when or where).

If the Makefile approach is known to be stable on UNIX, and there is no
other solution for Win32, I think that generating an appropriate setup script
at configuration time when Win32 is found should not be too difficult. This
actually does not solve problems with other languages... and this could
upset PHP users a little! ;)

However I'll try to write a more portable setup script, possibly to use
as template.

Thank you for working so hard on this, I really couldn't expect it!
