I think that this should be done after verifying that we are on Win32, as
"\" is allowed on UNIX: one can be so masochistic to do

[franz at discovery franz]$ mkdir odd\\dir
[franz at discovery franz]$ cd odd\\dir/
[franz at discovery odd\dir]$ touch odd\\file
[franz at discovery odd\dir]$ ls -l
total 0
-rw-r--r--  1 franz staff 0 May  5 15:24 odd\file
[franz at discovery odd\dir]$

still being legal! ;-)
