It's a bit more like a ports package, I believe, in that it will build
from source (including bundled libraries). So a gem of the Xapian
bindings should be able to work with an installed Xapian, or build its
own, depending on what it finds.

(Certainly that's how things like the ferret gem worked last time I
used it.)
