Not sure if it is useful as Rishabh was wondering about starting over,
but I've stripped out changes which are no longer relevant after the
letor merge to trunk which I've now mostly completed, and attached an
updated patch.

If do we use this patch, the methods which we intend the user to
override should probably all be virtual.
