Akshit — you should start by reading the HACKING document [1] so you know how to build Xapian from source and have an idea about how things fit together. Then we have a "help wanted" page on the wiki [2] which suggests ways to get involved, particularly some project ideas [3] which include both bite sized things that are good for getting started and more sizable pieces once you're comfortable.
