The first thing to do is decide what you'd like to work on.  It can be
based on an idea on the list, or something you've thought of yourself.

The next thing is to fetch the source code from our git repo and get
it to build on your machine.

Then try to produce a patch.  You could pick a small first step in the
project you're thinking about.  This should help you get you a better
understanding of what the project actually involves, and produce a more
realistic plan for what you can achieve in the time available.
