This value isn't needed for the doclen postlist - the number of entries
will just be the number of documents in the database, which we store
elsewhere along with other per-database statistics.

So for your doclength-specific encodings, there's no need to store this
at all.

The server rebooted itself recently, and it looks like the stale pid
file was preventing trac restarting.  I've just restarted it by hand -
