How was it "persuaded"?  If he rebuilt the XS glue, that's OK.  But just
forcing the wrong so major version library to load will cause problems -
the major version changed for a reason (there were changes to the headers
and the library).

If it's not the above, I'd suggest building a debug version of Xapian
(configure with --enable-debug).  That will enable various consistency
checks which might flag something up.
