Actually I'm going to have separate forms for search in the different
sites, so the user will not see any of this. So somewhat quirky
semantics doesn't really matter to me.
If I could come with a suggestion for the documentation, something
about how to search in different sites (or a pointer to where it can
be found) could be welcome together with the site indexing example I
quoted from overview.txt. I'll see if I can help with the
documentation once I get more up to speed with how things work, but
that might not be right away.
