Unhappy with use of word for documents here I've been trawling the same
idea-space.

The biggest blocker for us as been recognized here, lack of a decent
editor that humans can use.
(I mean people

Googling "openoffice docbook" reveals  among others

I'm inclined to go with whatever has the broadest editor support which
isn't neccessarily docbook and open office, but I though this might be
useful.
