Neither static methods nor private methods is actually required for a
solid object model; PHP4's problems lie elsewhere. However I agree
that PHP5 is a more sensible language to use; but I also know that
some hosting providers will still take years to upgrade - on the other
hand, most of them won't install Xapian, so it's not actually a
problem.
