Odd, it "reliably" fails in firefox with that error, but w3m from the
same box works.  Also firefox from a box on the same NAT network also
works.  So I guess it's something about my firefox.

That looks plausible, though the version of xapian-core isn't
necessarily the same as the version of xapian-bindings.
