In the documentation -- see docs/overview.txt in particular.

Some of the formats require external tools - those required for each
format are documented as above. Currently they're probed for the first
time a format is encountered during an indexing run.
If you installed from a package, it should suggest you also install the
other tools required (the Debian and Ubuntu ones do, if yours don't I
suggest you report a wishlist bug to whoever maintains them).
