A few complications later, Debian and Ubuntu packages are now available
from the repository on xapian.org.  For details of how to use this, see
http://xapian.org/download

Note that the GPG key I was signing releases with has expired (one of
the complications) so you'll need to import a new key for the signatures
on the packages to be accepted.

Enrico has uploaded the packages to Debian unstable.  It's unclear to me
at this point if they will make the next Debian or Ubuntu release.
