Are you using an x86 chip without SSE2 support? If so, configure with
--disable-sse (though note that this can cause slight inconsistencies in
results - if you're packaging Xapian for TinycoreLinux then there are
some tips on the wiki for how to package in such that users with SSE2-capable
CPUs don't get these issues forced upon them:

And if this is the issue, what's the box? Is it just rather old, or are
there modern x86-compatible CPUs without SSE2 support?
