Thank you very much for your thoughts on this.  It's been extremely 
helpful, and I really appreciate your time.  We haven't tried 
replicating Xapian rather than using a shared filesystem, and we might 
give that a go if we end up being blocked on modifications all the time. 
  But it seems like the retry is the way to go and I shouldn't be too 
concerned about it.
