When I announced 1.2.25.6 I said:
> I've made what is likely to be the last ever release of Search::Xapian.
However this was only in the email announcing the release, and not
clearly stated in the README, which means most people downloading
Search::Xapian probably won't have seen it. This release addresses
that.
It also fixes a minor bug which was reported and updates the README to
also say there aren't likely to be further releases.
Like the previous release, this release should work with any Xapian 1.4.x
release (and also 1.2.x but that's been obsolete for some time now), but
not with Xapian 2.x.
If you find a serious Search::Xapian bug (data loss or a security
vulnerability) please report it and we can assess if it justifies a
further release.
However, I'd strongly encourage anyone still using Search::Xapian to
migrate to the much more complete and still maintained Perl bindings in
xapian-bindings (which work with Xapian 1.4.16 and later, including
Xapian 2.x).

[Changes contributed by Olly Betts]
- README: Update status - there are not likely to be further releases.
- If the C++ compiler isn't found and g++ isn't installed, look for
c++ - this means the build should work out of the box on systems
such as FreeBSD where the default compiler is clang. Reported by
eserte12 (fixes #851).
