 OK, I've cleaned up the init_() stuff.

 Presumably denom==0 must be possible if the code coverage shows that
 branch taken?

 I think I probably agree about the FLAG_PARTIAL stuff.

 Another issue, as discussed on IRC, is clamping wdf of the synonym so it
 doesn't exceed the document length, or something like that.
