 This performance bug has been hitting us pretty hard in notmuch (since
 notmuch often adds or
 removes a single term (a tag) from a document with many terms (every term
 from the content of
 an email message).

 A user just submitted a patch (against the flint backend) which we've
 measured as providing
 a 5-6x speedup to notmuch tagging operations:
