 Sorry - got a bit carried away perhaps.  Are there any major objections
 from you? ;-)

 FWIW, the cause of me getting carried away was that a number of branches
 and features depending on this (in particular, the geospatial branch and
 the fix for ticket #206, and also several non-core posting sources I've
 developed), which I needed to work with multi-databases for a client.

 I'm open to comments about changing the implementation or design,
 though...
