Comment:

 My feeling is we've picked the low-hanging fruit from this tree, and while
 there are probably still useful gains to be had, the work isn't a trivial
 tweak we can squeeze in before 1.2.0.  And this should just be an internal
 change, so can be made in 1.2.x.
