 Incidentally, of course, we currently have the SortableSerialise class (in
 the matchspy branch) for serialising arbitrary strings together.  This
 could do with some clean up, but is roughly the sort of thing I was
 thinking of as an example when I said "provide convenient classes to allow
 serialising multiple values into a string".
