 it fails on the command that starts xapian-tcpsrv:

 Starting server on host 127.0.0.1, port 1239
 NetworkError: bind failed (Can't assign requested address)

 I checked if the localhost interface for some reason is broken but it's
 fine:

 oeliimac:xapian-core-1.0.12 ivo$ ping 127.0.0.1
 PING 127.0.0.1 (127.0.0.1): 56 data bytes
 64 bytes from 127.0.0.1: icmp_seq=0 ttl=64 time=0.045 ms

 Tried it as root to see if it's a privileges issue, same result.
