 Committed a cleaned up version of the patch to brass in r14267, and to
 chert in r14268.

 The issue is also relevant to flint (though not demonstrated by the
 supplied testcase as values are stored differently in flint) so needs
 backporting to flint too, and then backporting to 1.0.x.
