Comment:

 Backported to flint in r14269, and that to 1.0 in r14270 (along with an
 unrelated change to tests/api_none.cc which I managed to accidentally
 commit at the same time).

 This also affects quartz and backports pretty cleanly, so fixed there in
 r14272.
