 The first patch seems rather confused to me - some of the changes in it
 seem to be either undoing changes previously made, or perhaps just
 introducing seemingly undesirable changes, and it messes up the formatting
 of the !ChangeLog, so it's hard to see exactly what's happened.  So
 leaving that patch for now...
