Comment(by tack):

 I've also just verified that -O2 -fno-strict-aliasing works ok with gcc
 4.2, and the test suite passes all tests.

 Adding -fno-strict-aliasing if gcc 4.2 is detected would be even better
 than -O1, IMO.
