 It would at least still be needed to avoid breaking the code of anyone
 currently using it.  It might also still be needed to allow combined-tree
 builds to work, unless pkg-config can do that.

 But there's no reason why we can't support both, if somebody's interested
 enough to add support for generating a suitable .pc file.
