Comment (by olly):

 r17478 and r17479 progress us a bit further - I've split python3 into a
 separate directly to make things more manageable.  If the two turn out
 similar enough, we can merge later; if not, Python upstream seem
 determined to kill python 2 off so it shouldn't be a long term situation.
