 It seems likely we're going to make a compiler with C++11 support a
 requirement for 1.3.x (and releases going forwards) - at least nobody has
 so far raised any objections to my suggestion posted to the mailing list
 recently.

 It looks like version 12.4 beta of this compiler adds partial C++11
 support:

 I suspect that the requirement to use a very recent version of this
 compiler will mean we no longer hit issues like the ones reported in this
 ticket.
