New description:

 I've been marking various places in the code with FIXME:1.1: where I've
 had to
 put in messy workarounds for issues which can't be resolved without
 breaking ABI
 or API compatibility.  Each such instance has an explanation of what needs
 to be
 done.

 These should all be resolved and removed for 1.1; this issue is just to
 remind
