 The latest attachment is closer to something we can put in the testsuite -
 it's a single C++ source and will exit 0 for success and 1 for failure.
 I've checked it passes for current git master and fails if I revert the
 changes in 3dcd784bc105d7dc0db10bba1c9a8be28f52611b.

 It doesn't really fit with how our test harness works so it would need to
 be a separate test program I think.  It really ought to start the server
 on a free port dynamically like our test harness does.
