Comment:

 I'm going to close this as the situation has evolved in the past ~decade
 to the point where this is no longer useful.  Back then we were running
 builds on machines with very restrictive access (like the now-defunct SF
 compile farm), and also it's now reasonable to expect python to be
 available.
