Comment:

 Oops, I meant 1.5.0.  As noted above this could be backported to 1.4.x if
 it's not too invasive.  We're quite late in the 1.4.x development cycle,
 but cases like this where we're aiming to improve forward compatibility
 are worth considering.  This needs doing for master first regardless.
