But your revised patch doesn't change Makefile.am or Makefile.in at all,
so it can't work.  We need to link against glib to pull in the unicode
routines.

The existing patch requires fixing the Makefile by hand on 64 bit
installations which have lib64, but your patch requires fixing the
Makefile by hand on *EVERY* box, which is hardly an improvement.

I wouldn't worry about this too much - I'm going to be folding this
patch into the tree pretty soon anyway.
