Thanks for the patch.  It doesn't look like it is against trunk though
(e.g. xapian/base.h is no longer present in trunk) - did you attach the
1.2 version perhaps?

I think I'd rather focus on merging Mihai's work at this point, but as
you say someone may have a use for this.
