Gentoo Portage has xapian-core and xapian-bindings - there are links on
our download page:

http://xapian.org/download

Currently they appear to have 1.0.6 for both.

I'm no expert on Gentoo, but generally whether to use a package or build
from source depends on your needs, and your general feelings about packages.
In this case, whether you need Omega would seem to be a factor.
