What you can do with a SAN is to share the same LUN to multiple hosts
but with differing permissions.  Set up N of them with read only access
and one with write access.  With only a single host updating things you
can ensure that there is a consistent view of the database(s) at all times.
Of course you can play similar games with NAS.
