Yeah, heavy use of values has some slow cases in 1.0.x, which is why
we've overhauled how they're stored.

The new backend is pretty much finished for "streamed values".  The
library just needs hooking up in other places internally to use them.

There may be some other unrelated changes to the new backend still
though.

All the bindings are already available for it.  You can download
snapshot tarballs if you want to look:
