Is this with your full set of data (as opposed to the nice cut-down
version you attached to the ticket).  The files attached to the ticket
appear to compact and check without error for me.

It's possible it's an error in xapian-check, but I can't see how.  I
wouldn't recommend ignoring it - at face value, it means that Xapian
can't read the tag holding some global statistics (like the document
length, and the next document ID to allocate), which ought to have
noticeable consequences.  Is it possible to perform searches using the
resulting database?

Can you try running the following command (substituting the
appropriate path for your database for [db]):

   echo | xapian-inspect-1.1 [db]/postlist.

The output line I'm interested in is the one following "Key: \x00".
It should be something like:

Tag: \n\xe8\t\xac\x02\x92E||

(obviously, with different values).
