Umm, Xapian uses UTF-8 in those parts which actually care about
character representation.

Or do you mean a build of Xapian's Python bindings which is compatible
with your UCS-2 Python?

If so, what goes wrong if you just build the Python bindings as
distributed against your UCS-2 Python?
